What's the difference between sugargum and redgum firewood?

What's the difference between sugargum and redgum firewood?

Justin Davey |

We’ve added Sugar Gum firewood to our business as an alternative to redgum firewood.  There are a number of reasons to consider Sugargum firewood, or a mix with the traditionally popular redgum firewood.  Ultimately it comes down to personal preference, and there is a reason why everyone loves redgum.  But sugargum is well worth considering:

  • Sugargum firewood is sourced from farm plantations, whereas redgum firewood is taken sustainably from natural growth forests.  Some like that the Sugargum is grown for purpose, versus redgum that is sourced in a sustainable way from the natural environment.
  • Our Sugargum firewood is sourced from Western Victoria, as opposed to NSW native forests above the Murray River.  It has less distance to travel, and this does make it a more affordable option to the highly popular and traditional redgum firewood.
  • Sugar Gum is a much better long and hot burning source of firewood when compared to Red Gum. Sugar Gum has a Relative Available Heat Value of 95% where as (River) Red Gum is 81%. (Victorian Department of Primary Industries, Gavin Brook 2004).  It provides better value heating.
  • Sugargum is known to produce less sparks, smoke and ash than Redgum firewood.

Both sugar gum and red gum are popular choices for firewood in Australia due to their high density and long burning times.  Ultimately it comes down to personal preferences, on what firewood works best for you, in your heater, fireplace or oven.

When next placing your order for redgum firewood, ask us to swap a few of your logs for some sugargum to try the difference.

We have the following firewood options:
