Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about our firewood? Here are some of the most common things customers want to know about Redgum, Blue Gum, pickup, delivery and buying firewood by weight.
What is the difference between Redgum & Bluegum Firewood?
remove
add
Redgum is generally the denser, longer-burning hardwood and is often the premium choice for customers wanting strong overnight burn performance and long heat output.  It produces excellent coals. Blue Gum is also a quality hardwood, but is commonly seen as the more economical option for everyday home heating. It has great heat output initially, is easier to light, but isn't as great overnight reducing to ash more so than redgum does coals.  If you want a balance of value and performance, our 50/50 Redgum Blue Gum mix can be a great middle ground.  Start with your Bluegum then put in the Redgum for overnight warmth.
Which firewood is better - Redgum or Bluegum?
remove
add

It depends on what matters most to you. If you want a premium hardwood that is widely preferred for long, steady burn time, Redgum is usually the top choice, although a more premium product. If you want a quality hardwood at a sharper price point, Blue Gum is a strong option. Many customers choose a mixed load to get a bit of both.  If you are burning all of the time, Redgum might be for you.  If you burn only at night in the evening, Bluegum is a quick way to warm up your home.

How much firewood in meters is a tonne?
remove
add
As a general guide, 1 tonne of seasoned firewood is often around 2 cubic metres when neatly stacked, but this is only an approximation. The exact volume can vary depending on the timber species, moisture content, split size and how tightly the wood is stacked. That is why volume comparisons should always be treated as a guide rather than an exact equivalent.  Firewood providers selling by the meter stack it different ways - be wary of loose stacked loads as often you are getting far less than you are paying for.
Do we also sell kindling & firelighters?
remove
add
Yes. Alongside Red Gum, Blue Gum and our 50/50 mixed firewood, we also sell kindling, firelighters and matches.  Our kindling is sourced as a bi-product from the timber manufacturing business, run by another local family.  It's kiln dried, clean and easy to light.
Why buy firewood from a local store like ours instead of an online marketplace seller?
remove
add
Our business has been operating continuously since 1885, supplying the community with what they need, when they need it.  Buying from a local retail business gives you the opportunity to not just support our family, but also local jobs.  We currently employ over 30 staff accross our business, all local to our locations.  Our over 140+ x 5 star reviews aren't a coincidence.  We sell firewood fairly by weight, the firewood is dry and ready to burn and you can pop in to see our supply at any time.
Why is buying by weight better than by volume like by the meter?
remove
add

Buying by weight gives customers a clearer and more consistent way to compare what they are getting. Volume can vary depending on how the load is stacked, the amount of air space, and the size and shape of the pieces. Under Australian measurement rules, firewood sold by cubic metre should be measured when neatly stacked with as few gaps as possible, which shows why “loose” volume can be harder to compare fairly. That is why many customers prefer buying by weight.  If your current or past supplier has loosely stacked storage, you should consider your supply.

Can I pickup or come and see the firewood?
remove
add

Absolutely! We offer firewood pickup from the Upper Beaconsfield General Store, as well as delivery to surrounding areas. If you would rather collect your order yourself, or want to check out our supply, you can pop in any time we are open in the Barnyard.  You can order ahead or pop in - we have a team on 6 days per week for loading.

Is our firewood dry and ready to burn?
remove
add

Yes. Our firewood is guaranteed dry and ready to burn. That means you can order with confidence knowing the wood is intended for immediate use rather than needing extra seasoning time at home.  Be cautious when not buying from a trusted, reputable supplier as often cheaper wood is still defined as 'wet' or 'green' by industry standards.

Do we deliver firewood?
remove
add

Yes. We offer both a firewood pickup and delivery service.  We have a range of delivery vehicles to suit, based on the access and amount of firewood ordered.  Check our our Delivery Fleet HERE.
