When jobs do come up, the first thing we do is to go through existing resumes. Definitely call in to one of our locations and ask to speak to a Supervisor or Manager to provide an introduction and your resume as a first step. We’re in the hospitality business and you need to be confident enough to waltz in and say hello!
If you have provided your resume, it’s appreciated if you can come here as a next step and complete a formal application with us. The below will give you a bit of an idea on our structure, our roles and our locations.
We’re not your average business. We’re quite unique and as a result have a lot of staff that can do a lot of different things. We started out with a very flat structure. Everyone did everything and everyone helped each other. But as we grew and added multiple locations, we had to put in place a bit of a structure so we had the right support for each of our roles in the right places.
Our Managers lead the business and the strategy. Managers will still work on the floor when needed, jump on dishes and do what needs to be done. But they have other responsibilities too like making sure we can run the business efficiently and at a profit. Supervisors run the shift at each of our locations. They support our Managers getting what needs to be done. They give direction on shift, and take the lead during a shift when there is a problem or a direction needing to be given.
All of our team, no matter the role, are leaders. Leadership takes many forms, but we look for people who can lead wherever they are needed. It doesn’t matter if you are on the dishes, front of house or back of house, there’s always things to be noticed, improved or shared.
Not sure what role you might be looking for? The below is an outline on the roles we have in our business. Per the Organisational Structure above, these roles can work in one or more locations across the business.
To get a junior hand role with us, you will generally start with a trial shift. This is an opportunity for you to jump in and show us that you can take instruction and complete a task. If that goes well, you are then generally offered a Junior Contract role, most likely a Seasonal Contract. This is a fixed term contract allowing you to complete shifts with us over a 3 month period. During this period you are expected to take on shifts allocated and extras as they come up and match your availability. During your contract your work ethic, availability, personality, ability to take instruction, communicate and work as part of a team will all be assessed. Please note Hospitality isn’t for everyone. You need to be a happy friendly, confident person.
Kitchen Hands have experience in food preparation, learnt with us as a Junior Hand with us, or elsewhere at other workplaces. You should be able to hold down a station, or support other more experiences kitchen hands or chefs in food operations.
Generally our hires for these roles come from our Junior Hand’s as they age up out of the Junior Hand role.
Qualified Chefs have completed their apprenticeships, and generally have experience working in other similar kitchens like cafes, restaurants or pubs.
In between delivering products, they might load customers directly in the yard, sell retail products like pet food and stockfeed, and maintain the fleet through cleaning and maintenance.
We’re a small family country business. To work in the barnyard you should be friendly, happy and approachable.
Coming in and submitting your resume in person is always the best first step. It shows you care, are interested in a role and are a normal person. Yes it’s scary, but hospitality requires you to put yourself out there! If you have already submitted your resume to our business, please complete the below to formalise your application with us. Once received we will be in touch with you if there is a vacancy that matches. We do try to respond to all applications and resumes, but please understand we do receive large volumes and it’s not always possible to do so. But we try!
Your application will come through to the Manager responsible for hiring. If we have an advertised role that matches, and your resume in hand, we will be in touch with you to organise an interview.
We reccomend you go and stalk our business before the interview. Nothing says ‘I have no attention to detail or care’ like someone in an interview who hasn’t reasearched our business or stalked our social media.
We have a great team, and we want to add great people. We work hard, but we do it as a team and always look out for each other, our customers, the business and our communities. Here’s some of the social fun we get up to at the General Road. Find out more about us online on our socials.
